Optimizing Fertility

08 Nov Optimizing Fertility

Evidence shows that North American fertility rates are declining. Environmental factors such as pesticides, xenoestrogens (chemicals that mimic estrogen), toxic metals and unhelathy lifestyle are all contributing to this growing concern, and they affect both men and women.

While there have been many advances medical treatments for fertility, the reality is that only 25% of couples using them will give birth to a healthy baby. Research indicates that “alternative” therapies for fertility, including acupuncture or nutrition, have success rates of over 50%. A comprehensive natural treatment plan, which combines detoxification, nutrition, stress management, herbs, & acupuncture has the best chance of restoring balance and optimizing fertility in both partners.

Detoxify

It is virtually impossible to avoid environmental toxic exposure. A program for optimizing fertility should begin with a detoxification program to “clean out” and then work to “build up”. Our organs of elimination remove the normal waste of the body, but can become overwhelmed with stress, processed foods, and modern chemical and toxin exposure. This results in a variety of symptoms that may include difficulty with conception or miscarriage.

Nutrition

Proper nutrition has long been known to impact both the ability to reproduce and the health of the developing fetus (ie. folic acid deficiencies and neural tube defects; zinc or selenium deficiencies and low sperm count). The importance of a healthy diet cannot be overstated. To function properly, the reproductive system requires the proper vitamins and minerals. Nutritional deficiencies can impair hormone function, inhibit sperm production, and contribute to the production of abnormal sperm.
Eat a natural foods diet that focuses on fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, fish, poultry, legumes, nuts, and seeds. Eliminate processed and refined foods (e.g., white flour), junk food, sugars, alcohol, and caffeine. Caffeine has a suppressive affect on the liver and can affect hormone imbalance in some people

Optimizing Fertility

Natural health methods of fertility enhancement help couples move gently and naturally to a state of health and well-being that will allow a mother’s body to not only conceive but to carry to term a healthy child.  Naturopathic treatments are designed to stimulate your own natural production of hormones while restoring the health and harmony of your entire body. Detoxification, diet, herbs, acupuncture, exercise, relaxation and stress reduction techniques may take between 3 and 6 menstrual cycles to restore balance naturally. Having unrealistic expectations can compound stress, frustration, worry and fear. Work on shifting thoughts of frustration, anger, doubt, worry into focusing on welcoming thoughts & what gifts, strengths, and lessons you have to offer your baby.

Happy baby making!
